Introduction to poems - Haikus, Limericks, Sonnets and free Verse
Focus on Limericks
Give an example of a limerick, read out loud with the class
Have students construct a limerick on their own.
Create a short story
Talk about different kind of stories - mystery, humor, adventure, etc.
Discuss components of a short story - plot, characters, settings, etc.
Have students to brainstorm and develop ideas for a story on their own.
Instructor will work with the students with the development of their stories.
Use words to share who you are
Chose a topic such as a favorite Girl Scouts memory, a memorable day or a big adventure to focus on.
Give examples of interesting ways to write about this topic.
Give a personal example.
Have students write one paragraph of a topic of their choice.
Write an article
Discuss different types of articles - an interview, a news story or a "round up".
Students pick one type of article they would like to write.
Develop topic or interview someone in order to complete an article in the next session.
Instructor will show students an example of an article and will assist students in writing their own articles.
Tell the world what you think
Have students think about a topic such as their favorite animal, a place they would like to visit or their favorite book.
Develop points on why it is their favorite animal or book.
Have students write a paragraph eplaining their topic.

Artist Bio - Christine Granillo
Christine Granillo received her BA in English at California State University, Fullerton in 2007. Her poetry has been featured in an art exhibit and has future plans to publish her writing. She is currently working towards her Masters Degree in English to pursue a career as a college English teacher.
